Profile: Priya and Carlos’s Wedding: Launching a bright future

Priya Prasad and Carlos Perez met during a group motorcycle ride one July evening.

Carlos immediately thought Priya was beautiful, but then guessed she must be with someone else. Priya noticed that Carlos was on his own, so she welcomed him into the group. She thought, “He’s cute! But he must be way too young for me!”

They began dating, and one month later, on a motorcycle ride to Steveston for lunch, Carlos complained about his knee hurting the entire way there. While Priya had her back turned, Carlos pulled a ring box from the knee protector on his riding suit. Before she knew it, he was down on one knee.

They decided to marry as soon as possible. The December holidays were the next seasonal break so they thought, “Why not kick off the New Year as husband and wife?”

They held their engagement party at the home of Priya’s parents, with lots of family and friends and then began planning two weddings: an Indian wedding at Riverside on December 30 and a Western wedding at Westwood Plateau Golf & Country Club on December 31. They chose the Westwood location for its great food and great location. “The service and staff were amazing,” says Priya.

The bride wore a red lengha to the Indian wedding and a crème-colored gown to the Western wedding. The groom wore an achkan suit to the Indian wedding and a tone-on-tone pin-striped black tux with crème brocade vest and tie to the Western wedding.

The Indian wedding was very traditional and incorporated many Indian customs, whereas the Western wedding was an extremely elegant, winter-themed affair. Both officiants were women; in fact, the pandita (the Hindu officiant) was Priya’s aunt (her mom’s sister) from Australia, who conducted the ceremony in English and Hindi. To explain all the rituals, they had handmade programs available at each table.

The highlight of the day was the venue. With a lot of help from family it was beautifully decorated with a beautiful surprise: a custom-made doli. The vows were another highlight. They were perfect and the couple had chosen them themselves. Priya’s sister Joti presented a surprise dance performance at the reception. They also had a caricaturist at the reception who created a drawing of each guest, as a remembrance of the couple’s wedding. Someone stole Carlos’s shoes, but he got them back for a bargain-basement price. Other highlights were the wedding cake, which was amazing, and the bridesmaids and groomsmen, who looked stunning.

The couple’s advice to brides and grooms planning a wedding is to front-end load — do most of the work early in the planning — and then you won’t have to worry about it later. The days go by much too fast as it is.

After the wedding the couple made a quick getaway to the Harrison Hot Springs Resort and then took an actual honeymoon five months later, a seven-week tour of the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, France, Spain and Morocco.

Now that they’re married Priya loves looking forward to spending time with Carlos every day. Carlos loves all the plans they have together. “The future looks bright,” he says.
