When the bride is a wedding decorator, you know it’s going to be a beautiful affair. Decorating Diva Mona Goswami was introduced to future husband Tavaras Powell through a mutual friend. Unlike trite Hollywood stereotypes, there were no fluttering hearts and sweaty palms leading to impromptu nuptials. Rather this ardor grew from friendship and warmed in time.

Tavaras’ proposal to Mona was a private affair at a restaurant overlooking the twinkling lights of nighttime Seattle. “After 10 years, we knew it was time,” says Mona, who admits she was still surprised by the thought and planning Tavaras put into making the moment perfect.

Family and friends began pitching in as things got moving. Mona and Tavaras put together a ceremony that was a medley of Assamese and Western traditions. Thanks to her familiarity within the wedding industry, Mona was able to spearhead the effort and keep things running smoothly by compiling a binder with all the details she needed to remember. The couple’s biggest worry was a common one for every couple planning an outdoor ceremony, or two—would Mother Nature cooperate?

Pre-wedding parties leading up to the special day included a family mixer, featuring a steel drum band and the more traditional bridal shower and stagette. The big day finally arrived on one of the hottest, most beautiful days of the year. On June 28, two hundred of Mona’s and Tavaras' closest friends and family gathered on the lush garden grounds of the Chateau Cargill in White Rock. Each person was welcomed with a hot pink and orange agenda that perfectly matched the vivacious wedding motif and bore the message: "You have been invited to share in one of the greatest moments of our lives. This is a celebration of our marriage and our ten-year anniversary of being together."

The Hindu ceremony was conducted under a tented mandap, featuring fresh orange marigolds and hot pink fabric swatches, by Mona’s grandparents who had arrived from England. The bride spoke her vows in a traditional Assamese white and gold mehkala while the groom sported an achkin from Sunny's ID on Main Street. The beautiful, bright garlands used in the ceremony were created by the bride’s aunt, providing yet another special touch to this family affair.

After the Hindu ceremony, guests relaxed and mingled as refreshments were served on the lawn. When they returned the mandap had been transformed into a modern floral backdrop with hot pink flowers dangling from the pillars and rose-petal covered pedestals.

The bride and groom also underwent a transformation in preparation for the civil portion of their ceremony. Mona opted for an off-white dress from Lisa’s Bridal while Tavaras had selected a dashing tuxedo from Leading Men Tuxedos. For this event, the couple was joined by their groomsmen and bridesmaids, who wore custom made hot pink mehkalas purchased by the bride’s mother in Assam, India.

Ravinder, who is Mona’s friend and business partner--a.k.a the other half of Decorating Divas--had hand crafted bride’s bouquet along with the flowers carried by the bridesmaids and groomsmen’s lapel pins. As the ceremony began, Mr. Headley, the talented musician engaged by the couple, played the steel pan drums. The ceremony was conducted Mr. Bob Buzza.

Guests were ushered into the historical Chateau Room heritage house once the civil ceremony was complete. Inside the foyer, a beautiful table with an embedded glass floral design held the guest book. Well-wishers transcribed their sentiments and also paused to pick up their seating cards before proceeding to the formal banquet area where they found place cards with personalized messages handwritten by the bride.

Inside the banquet room, Gold decoration from the head table shimmered in candlelight simultaneously creating a romantically elegant and intimate setting. The festive orange and pink motif was subtly infused through touches such as the centrepieces-- embedded pink and orange marigolds in glass cylinders with floating candles.

Dinner, which consisted of both Western and Indian food, respectively prepared by the Chateau staff and Tandoori Kitchen proved to be a hit. Afterwards the whole party moved to the second floor of the heritage home for the first dance and cake cutting. The second floor had been decorated to emulate a stylish lounge for the final portion of the evening. Mehndhi green and aqua décor dazzled in the candlelight. The cake was prepared by the couple’s mutual friend Raj Birk. Both Mona and Tavaras agreed, “it tasted amazing.”

In retrospect, this fairytale fusion seems the perfect culmination of friends, family, and culture. Both Mona and Tavaras are now excited by the prospect of taking their relationship to the next level. Looking back, Mona feels organization was key to the beautiful execution of her and Tavaras' special day. Her advice for a successful relationship is to be "individually together" meaning you shouldn't lose yourself or your independence while remaining considerate and inclusive of your spouse.

“Just seeing our families and friends dancing it up on the floor was more than we could have ever asked for,” remembers Mona. “We wouldn’t have changed at thing.  The setting was perfect. It was beautifully decorated, intimate and everything was amazingly on time. Our friends and family still talk about it a year later. They tell us it was the most fun wedding of the year.”
