Nita & Sudhir: Truly a Couple of the Electronic Age
Profile: Nita Naidoo and Sudhir Datta are truly a couple of the electronic age who became acquainted through close personal friends: Mac and Dell.

An Internet profile can be a tricky way to make a good first impression. The profile can seem terribly contrived or it can read like a shopping list, explains Nita.

“But I loved the intelligence, insight, and humour Sudhir conveyed through his profile—I’m a sucker for a good writer,” she says.

Sudhir was won over by Nita’s big, crazy smile in the picture she posted with her profile—no stylishly blasé, pouty looks here.

Despite serious misgivings about engaging in a long-distance relationship (Nita lived in Victoria, while Sudhir lived in Vancouver), they both felt the other person was someone worth knowing.

Remote relationship, face-to-face proposal

Sudhir defied Nita’s mantra of “two years or too late” by proposing just one day after the “deadline.” The couple was on their first getaway together, to Las Vegas, when Sudhir popped the question over dinner that evening (at Todd Oldham’s Olives in the Bellagio). The couple then headed over to the Venetian for an indoor canal ride and finished up the evening with a performance of O by Cirque du Soleil.

“Even when you’re expecting it, it’s a fantastically emotional experience,” says Nita. “I remember giggling hysterically at the time and then dissolving into tears while standing in line at the airport next day.”

Planning a fall wedding

The couple knew their wedding would be big and that it would take about a year to plan from the time of the engagement. After making that decision, it was a matter of preference and practicality.

“Autumn is my favourite season, and we both knew it would be easier and more economical to secure a venue and suppliers in the shoulder season,” says Nita.

After establishing the date as November 1, 2008, the couple’s first planning step was a visit to the Cultural Wedding Show. There they met with a lot of vendors and suppliers and got a good idea of what was available.

“It was a great and tremendously helpful starting point for planning the wedding. The Cultural Wedding Planner proved priceless for providing us with checklists, contact information, scheduling tips, and more.”

Using the planner helped the couple decide which traditions to celebrate--Sudhir is Arya Samaji Hindu, and Nita is half Hindu and half Parsee. Together, they decided to hold a Parsee style engagement at Nita’s house shortly after they got engaged, and then hold the wedding following Arya Samaji tradition.

The couple planned to invite 200 guests to the ceremony and about 500 guests to the reception, and booked rooms at the Westin Bayshore on the shores of Vancouver’s Coal Harbour.

“It was a beautiful location and the hotel staff were extremely professional and accommodating,” says Nita. “The food was so fabulous that when we close our eyes and no when we think back to our wedding day, the first thing both of us remember is the food—it’s unanimous!” says Nita.

Finding a colour theme

After we discussed colours, Sudhir designed an invitation with a blue and white theme and featuring Ganesh, and the wedding was built around this blue and white theme.

Although the bride and groom started out in traditional colours—a teal and red lengha for the bride and a cream and burgundy suit for the groom—by the evening the colour them dominated. The groom wore white and ice blue and the bride wore a blue and orange lengha in the evening.

“Everything was purchased locally,” says Nita. “The quality of all the products was spectacular and we knew someone close by was accountable if anything went wrong.”

For decor and florals, they hired two decorators—Joy from Amour Event Design and Jesse from Precious Moments. The flowers were provided and arranged by Sukhi from Delta Flowers.

“All these ladies are incredible professionals but also very warm and caring. They got excited about the event with us, and what they delivered was over and above our expectations.”

Photography was by Rafael Ferri of Match Studio “He’s an incredible talent and makes the day very enjoyable,” says Nita.

Shiamak’s Indo Jazz troupe performed at the reception. “These talented youths dazzled the guests and truly made the evening distinctive and special,” says Nita.

Keeping it real

“Reality TV has shown us how carried away some people can get when planning a wedding,” says Nita. “Our aim was to make the process enjoyable for everyone, including the people helping us.”

We tried to be very easygoing. Surprisingly, neither of them gave too much thought to the day, but this worked in their favour. “We knew we were working with professionals. We asked them to exercise their creativity and have fun. And they all outdid themselves—it was beyond anything we could have ever requested.”

Nevertheless, the couple admits their biggest worry was refining the timeline. They wanted to make sure everything was done in a timely manner, so the guests were always comfortable and entertained.

In the end, though, Nita reminds brides and grooms to be: “It’s your day and there’s no point in being so uptight that you don’t enjoy it. Take everything in stride; no one will remember if the votives don’t match the flowers.”

Both Nita and Sudhir are busy people but after the wedding they escaped to Vegas—the site of their engagement—for a quick and enjoyable getaway. Returning to Vegas had a cyclical quality they both liked.
