Lucky Number 7 Suits This Bollywood Style Wedding

July 7, 2007-7/7/7-was the lucky day for Simone and Mandip. The couple wanted a summer wedding, and when they looked at the calendar for July, it was obvious that the seventh day of the seventh month of 2007 became their date.

"Marriage is often compared to a gamble," laughs Simone. "So for us it was all about Lucky Number 7."

The couple had been together about a year when Mandip invited Simone to look at some condos he was thinking of purchasing. "We went to a place along the Fraser River and, as we walked along the river, he kept talking about random things. As I approached a patio overlooking the water I was extremely confused to see a beautiful table set up with red roses, red wine, and dinner from our favorite restaurant in Tsawwassen. When I turned around to question what was going on Mandip was already down on one knee."

Mandip could not have picked a better place to propose. "The river means a lot to me because it was where my father has worked his whole life. It is a very personal place for me, and the fact that he took me there for my proposal meant the world to me. He knew I was always Daddy's little girl, and he told me that he wanted to be the next best man in my life and wanted to spoil me for the rest of my life."

A Round of Pre-Wedding Parties

Soon after the proposal, their engagement party was held on July 28, 2006, at Dhaliwal Banquet Hall. Then the couple had all the pre-wedding parties: engagement, ladies' party, mayan ceremonies, and of course the now-popular tradition of groom and bride prank night.

"His friends got me good for that!" says Simone. "I had my bachelorette party in Las Vegas and Mandip had his in Montreal. My aunt also threw a wonderful bridal shower a few weeks before the wedding, as did my friends from work."

A Traditional Indian Wedding

"The wedding was an amazing experience for both of us," says Simone. "As I sat in the room at the temple waiting for the ceremony, I was just extremely anxious to see Mandip. I hadn't seen him for 10 days leading up to the wedding, so when we were finally together at the ceremony, I was ecstatic! It was like seeing him for the first time again, when I saw him at the temple."

"I found the ceremony to be extremely spiritual," says Simone, "and I feel blessed to have my family and friends share it with us."

A reception with 550 guests was held later the same day at Dhaliwal Banquet Hall. The reception opened with a fantastic performance by a belly dancer, who got the crowd anticipating the bride and groom's arrival. "When we walked in," says Simone, "everything was perfect and our night as husband and wife began."

After our belly dancer started the night, my good friends from the Destiny Dance Company customized a performance of salsa, stomp, jazz, and much more.

Pretty in Pink

The couple wanted the look of pastels and something fun and summery as the theme at their reception and their wedding attire matched the theme. At the reception, Simone wore a one-of-a-kind stunning pink net sari from the Azara bridal collection in Mumbai, a contrast to the traditional red and gold lengha she had worn to the ceremony in the morning. The lengha was designed by Bollywood designer Tarun Tahiliani that was custom made in India. At the ceremony in the morning, Mandip wore a traditional gold achkan with red embroidery adorned with Swarovski crystals to match Simone's lengha. In the evening he wore a charcoal suit with a tie to match the bride's reception sari.

Simone recalls: "I was thinking 1960s Bollywood actress for my look at the reception. I wanted to recreate the elegance you would see in the black and white films of that era."

Extending the pink theme, her cards were pink, with a ribbon bow and crystals. "Pink cards are not very common or traditional, but something I had always wanted!" says Simone.

The Planning Process

"We both were a part of the planning process," says Simone, "and we made all the decisions together. It was really nice to be able to plan such a big event together and agree on everything we wanted."

"I often think about how beautiful the day was, and how everything just fell into place so perfectly." It must have been more than luck.

"If brides and grooms have the time," says Simone, "be sure to take it and start the planning early. We had a lot of help from the Cultural Wedding Planner. We each had our own copy as we both planned together. My brother and Mandip's sister had also recently got married so it was a great help to get both their advice for our planning."

To stay organized, the couple set deadlines and specific dates to get wedding stuff done, and it all worked out.

"Just really take the time to enjoy the time leading up to your wedding," says Simone. "Take some space from your other half and spend time with family and friends. If you compromise with each other, the decisions are much easier to make and plus you have to practice the compromising, because there is a lot of that after the wedding."

Good planning advice and the Lucky Number 7 brought success to Simone and Mandip's wedding day. "Everything fit into our one day. We were worried about being on time, and luckily we were," she says.
