The GOOD, The Bad and The Ugly of Getting Married on Halloween
Profile: The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly: Getting Married on Hallowe’en

If you’ve ever picked up a copy of The Cultural Wedding Planner you’ll find an array of gorgeous stories detailing the proposals, ceremonies, and receptions of couples who want to share their unique marital experiences. The team at Cultural Weddings ® provides brides and grooms with a plethora of resources aimed at personalizing the most special of occasions. But what audiences haven’t heard from this talented bunch are wedding stories of their own, and, as it turns out, Project Manager: Vicki Singh and her now-husband, Navneet, have a fantastic one to share! The temple they wanted provided very limited availability, so, rather than waiting another six months to say “I do”, they took the plunge as soon as they were able. It just so happened their special day coincided with the spookiest occasion of the year, Halloween!

As you can imagine, there are an array of pros and cons to getting married on All Hallow’s Eve. For one thing, it tends to be VERY VERY cold! Wearing leggings underneath your very heavy embroidered Indian bridal lengha doesn’t typically spring to mind, nor does smiling for your pictures during the ‘classic walk in the park’ when your face is so frozen it feels numb, but those are just a couple of the things Vicki endured for the sake of her ceremony! She also wasn’t particularly thrilled when a stranger outside the Pan Pacific Hotel in downtown, who was dressed as The Joker who happened to be attending a Halloween party the same evening, quipped, “Nice costume!” upon seeing her clad in her traditional Indian wedding garb.

Besides the risks brides and grooms take in terms of the cold weather, couples should also consider the fact that friends and family will have to choose between the wedding (and future anniversaries!) and attending Halloween functions; a cause for antsy children who'd of course rather be out "Trick or Treating".

Be sure to investigate when daylight savings time occurs. In Vicki’s case, it happened to occur on the very same day as the wedding, which proved to be both a blessing and a curse. Guests arrived early for the afternoon reception, but punctuality for the morning ceremony was another story! There’s also the potential, and all-too-typical, October rain, so consider waterproofing pretty much everything you want to use that day!

Having said all that, though, there are some definite pluses that shouldn’t be overlooked! In Vicki’s case, orange and red are not only her favourite colours, but are also the colours associated with her cultural ceremony, so she was able to adhere to the season’s theme while honouring preferences and tradition. Pretty convenient! Though the day’s festivities followed a somewhat unconventional timeline (the ceremony happened early in the morning and was followed immediately by an afternoon reception), fireworks are acquired cheaply in the fall, so the event was summed up with quite a bang! Always consider the positive aspects when faced with atypical circumstances!

Despite the ups and downs about an October 31st wedding, Vicki states there are so many creative (not creepy) opportunities to incorporate some really unique details into the merriment. You might consider handing out Halloween candy goodie bags to any youngsters, and allowing your adult guests to unleash their inner children at a Samhain sweets buffet table. You could embellish your decor with monogrammed jack-o-lanterns to personalize the occasion and really get into the spirit of the day. And, of course, let’s not forget everyone’s favourite autumn flavour! Decadent pumpkin spice drinks, pumpkin pies and pumpkin cakes and cupcakes are sure to please your crowd! With an open mind and some creative resources, you can turn your Halloween wedding into an absolutely unforgettable occasion!

Keep in mind though - the jokes you will endure from family members when they remember your wedding anniversary falls on Halloween. At least they won’t forget the date! And don’t forget the added “LOL” when they text you “ Happy Annivesarsary LOL.”
