Am & Sukhi - Traditional Sikh Wedding on the Beach in Mexico at the Palace Resorts.

When Am and Sukhi first met in university, it wasn’t love at fist sight. In fact, Sukhi can’t even remember her first impression of Am, and Am laughingly says he thought Sukhi “wasn’t my type.”

But when they met up years later, things had changed. Their relationship grew and blossomed. Finally, after knowing each other for almost 12 years, Am proposed to Sukhi, who says she was surprised by “how much thought he put into it to make me feel special.”

Although Am and Sukhi were intent on a Sikh wedding, they wanted to give it a personal twist. They decided to hold a destination wedding in Mexico, even though they knew it would be difficult to explain their customs and traditions in a foreign country.

“We never wanted a big local wedding,” explains Sukhi. We only wanted close family and friends there. Since our families don’t live in the same city, there would have been traveling regardless. So why not Mexico? If we followed tradition, our wedding ceremony would be in Winnipeg and the reception in Calgary. When all was said and done, the amount the everyone would spend was equivalent to going to Mexico.”

Sukhi and Am began looking for a venue big enough for a wedding on the beach. “We wanted to make sure it offered great service and was rated well on Trip Advisor, because we wanted our guests to feel cared for and pampered. The family was a little nervous,” says Sukhi. “But they wanted us to be happy.”
With a little help from Dori of Travel By Design, the ceremony was eventually booked for November 29th, 2012 at the Moon Palace on Cancun Beach. The reception would take place in the resort’s Star Ballroom.

Before the big day, There were many traditional ceremonies, including the engagement party, ladies party, shower, staggette, two stags, mayia, and jagoo. “Everything we did for the wedding was customary,” explains Sukhi.

It was a fine morning when November 29th rolled around. 245 guests watched in anticipation as Sukhi appeared in a rose-coloured Anarkali Suit purchased from Sunny’s Bridal. Her hair was done by Anita Hundal with make-up by Beant Magherea. Am wore a white and rose kurta that coordinated beautifully with his bride’s outfit.

Like any outdoor wedding, weather had been a concern, but the day was brilliant. In retrospect, seeing the water during the ceremony and hearing the sounds of the waves while surrounded by loved ones are what Sukhi and Am say remember best. “It was important do the wedding the way we wanted—Am and Sukhi style, not focus on small details,” adds Sukhi.
That evening in the Star Ballroom, DJ Envy from Toronto and local Brazilian dancers entertained guests. The bride and groom also rented a horse-drawn carriage and golf carts for riding. As for wedding favours, a every guest received a hand-written, personalized thank you card.

“We discussed all the details between the two of us, and we made all decisions,” says Sukhi, who adds that the wedding might have been more stress free if they had chosen a country that understood their traditions.

“Go to the destination prior to the wedding and speak to planners to ensure they understand the culture—or use a destination wedding planner,” she advises.
When asked what they love most about being together, Sukhi says, “Everything! He’s free-spirited and has the biggest heart.” For Am, it’s Sukhi’s patience and smile that make him happy. He adds they’re now looking forward to starting a family.

Sukhi and Am’s advice to newly married couples is to communicate constantly. “And if all else fails, call your mom!” laughs Sukhi.
